Chronicles' three-generation header for 2001

HITMAKER AWARD: Last year about this time Johnny Mathis had been set to receive the Hitmaker Award from the National Songwriter's Hall of Fame. This year, that award is going to his friend Dionne Warwick. Remember last year, they had Aaron Neville serenade Mathis with one of the songs that made him famous. Although they don't say exactly who will do the honors for Dionne, I personally can't think of a better person to do it than her bud Johnny Mathis! I'll be interested to see who ultimately gets that honor. In the meantime, read about this year's awards ceremony at the NSHF's new and improved website!

NOTES ON LBR: Loyal reader Paula got mad and wrote to Sony about the Live By Request show. Apparently she made herself known pretty well, since they actually responded to her! In her words:

They said they have spoken with the companies who are working to make Johnny Mathis' appearance on LBR available. They said to be assured that they are focused on this release and expect it to happen this fall. They suggested checking Sony's New Release Page where the release date will be posted when it finally happens. They also offered their apologies and thanked me for my patience. If they only knew how impatient I am at this point!

If anyone else wants to try gently persuading Sony that we want this, the e-mail address Paula used is legacyonline@sonymusic.com. Legacy's new release page is here, and Columbia's is, as always, below in the Links of Interest. So, it seems now we're hearing the fall for this thing. Seems to me they said that LAST year, but there it is. Pardon me if I don't hold my breath.

CORPORATE GIG: I see where they hired Johnny Mathis as the entertainment for another big-spenders' party to benefit the UC-Santa Monica Medical Center. This event was held last Saturday the 19th at the Regent Beverly Wilshire's Winter Garden and Ball Room. The press release said that post-event pictures were available, but doesn't say with whom!

ON WITH THE SHOW: Pollstar shows a NEW DATE scheduled for October 19th and 20th for Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Hilton. I didn't see any tickets on sale yet.

Tickets are on sale for the Nashville Symphony concert in Antioch, Tennessee (June 14). There is an 8-ticket limit with strict enforcement, which is good, as 8 should certainly be plenty for anyone!

Tickets are on sale for the shows at the Silver Legacy Casino in Reno, Nevada. Prices are $50, $44, and $30; call (800) 687-8733 for details or use the online form.

Mathis returns to the Westbury Music Fair on July 20th & 21st. Tickets are on sale NOW online via Ticketmaster for these new dates.

Tickets are now on sale for the shows in Hyannis, Massachusetts, at the Cape Cod Melody Tent on Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5. New Englanders can still buy tickets for the North Shore Music Theatre concert in Beverly, Massachusetts, north and east of Boston near Salem, on Wednesday, August 15 and Thursday, August 16.

Tickets for the concert in Saratoga, California (a suburb of San Jose) on Thursday, August 30th are on sale now. Since it's on a Thursday night, it's probably not a good gig for out-of-towners unless one no longer works for a living. There is a ticket limit (6) and prices are from $65-$100.

Don't know yet if tickets can be bought now for the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut (don't ask where that is) on October 5th and 6th.

NEW CONCERT DATE FOR 2002! Ticketmaster shows a date for Jones Hall, Houston, Texas, on Thursday, February 7, 2002. Obviously tickets are not on sale yet, but I think the fact that he has started booking next year's shows is WONDERFUL. Is Johnny Mathis not amazing? Soon to be 66 years old and still very much in demand!

Sorry, still no Canadian or other foreign dates that I can see. I think I'd find some way to let Mathis know you guys want to hear him sing, too. In the meantime, if you live in North America and you've never seen Johnny Mathis in concert, what are you waiting for??
