TRIBUTE TO HEROES: For those of us without cable, there wasn't anything to watch last Friday except a telethon! But it was a most worthy cause, which I understand has raised $150 million so far, which is excellent work! There were some beautiful performances; it's too bad they couldn't have asked Mathis to join them. I know the perfect song he could have done, too: "Seasons of Love". The message of that song would certainly have been right on time...
Besides song and prayer, there are other ways to support the stricken. Donations are still of course being taken at various organizations all around the world such as the Red Cross, England's Red Crescent, Helping.org, and others. When talking about over 6,500 families who have been affected, and not just in New York City, the $300-400 million collected so far isn't nearly enough. It's going to be a blue Christmas for a lot of kids this winter, and every little bit will help.
ON THE RADIO: The Mathis Chronicles is global! My friend Lindaura Raposo Del Carlo, whom my readers met earlier this month, wants to pass along this message:
We, the Brazilian Fan Club, feel really sorry for the horrible attack to New York...We can only say that we are feeling it deep in our hearts...and no words can be spoken or written to express our sadness...This short note is to say that I made a special program at Trianon AM Radio, that can be reached by Internet. The date will be next Saturday, September 29, at 7:00 p.m., São Paulo local time, that means one hour less on New York, 4 hours less on West Coast...This is a special program we did as a homage to our dear John for his birthday next Sunday, September 30.
The site is: http://www2.uol.com.br/trianon -- and they use the Real Player System. Please, feel free to send an e-mail to the Trianon Radio Station, telling what you thought of the program. I'm sure they will appreciate it.
Editor's note: English-speakers might need a fairly good command of Portuguese to understand the site or to communicate to the station owners, unless they can understand English. For instance, it may help to know that "ouvir a rádio" means listen to the radio!
More radio news: Although I'm not sure I understand the title, this article by Rito Asilo discusses a radio station in the Phillipines where I gather a little of everything can be heard!
GREAT SHOT: Jones and Brown Productions, Inc. produce big-name corporate gigs. Johnny Mathis is one of their recent productions. Look at this great shot of Mathis with one of the producers.
TAKING ROUTE 66: Johnny Mathis turns 66 on Sunday, September 30, 2001. Joyeux anniversaire, Feliz cumpleaños, Parabens, Chuc Mung Sinh Nhat, Hongera, Otanjou-bi Omedetou Goziamasu, Buon Compleanno, Yom Huledet Same'ach, and Happy Birthday from The Mathis Chronicles and everybody around the world!
ON WITH THE SHOW: Tickets are $55 and $82 for the show at the Foxwoods Casino in the Pequot Nation town of Mashantucket, Connecticut (about 50 miles SE of Providence, Rhode Island) on October 5th and 6th. Although listed on Ticketmaster, they're not taking orders there apparently. Plus, Ticketmaster is only showing the Friday night show, so call 1-800-200-2882 for details. I take it as a very good sign that the shows have not been canceled, as of this time. Foil the terrorists and go to the show...although I personally would probably see if one could get there by train...
Still seems to be a go for the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 19th and 20th. Tickets are $55, $65, & $75. They don't sell online either, call 1-800-222-5361.
Looks like it's still a go for Caesars Atlantic City November 9th and November 10th.
Tickets go on sale October 13 for the show in Fort Myers, Florida on the Washington's birthday (22nd) at the Barbara B. Mann Hall.
Johnny Mathis will hopefully return to Westbury in Long Island on March 8th and 9th, 2002, according to Pollstar, the best source for concert information.
I think it's more important than ever to get out and attend a concert if you've never seen one. We're all a little spooked by what's happened, but you know, living in fear is no way to live. Tomorrow never was a promise, so...live for the moment, make peace with a friend, acquaintance, or relative you haven't seen in a long time, and go see one of the greatest living phenomenons in the world doing what he does best!
