New to the music of Johnny Mathis?

Well, I won't try to fool you; there are a lot of Mathis recordings that have album cover value but no other. But never fear; in case you don't want to spend money on close to 100 records and CDS, these twelve well-executed recordings represent just about every different style of music he's done. The neophyte collector will have well-rounded examples of Mathis' vocal athleticism and the diversity of repertoire from which to build. Enjoy!

  • Good Night Dear Lord: The Mathis approach to religious music will absolutely blow you away.

  • Johnny Mathis' All-Time Greatest Hits:You get all his early hits, plus some gems from the period immediately following his return to Columbia records.

  • Johnny Mathis In Person: the VERY BEST of his two live albums, recorded in Las Vegas at Caesar's Palace.

  • Once In A While: Contemporary Mathis, eighties-style!

  • Olé: one of only two Spanish language recordings ever done by Mathis, this one is the only Mercury recording. It's a wonderful example of his versatility and mastery of songs in any language!

  • I'm Coming Home: You hear the soulful side of Mathis here with this great Thom Bell production.

  • Merry Christmas: If you must have a Christmas album, go with this Percy Faith-produced classic.

  • The Hollywood Musicals: Mathis loves the theater and old musicals, and it really shows in this partnership with the Henry Mancini Orchestra.

  • Tender Is The Night: The best of the Mercury albums, IMHO.
  • In A Sentimental Mood--Mathis Sings Ellington: The closest thing to a live performance in a studio album. Nominated for a Grammy in 1990.
  • All About Love(1996) or Because You Loved Me (1998): A good place to start is with either one of these, which are his latest studio recordings! Very contemporary nineties.

So where do you find your Mathis collection? Try garage sales, estate sales, auctions (careful not to pay too much), nice people who share, surf the net, Salvation Army and other thrift stores. You might even try here.

    God Bless You, Mr. Mathis.
